Change in relationships: in these hypermodern times we observe that the attitudes which characterize the relationships are also changing. Love has been idealized while relationships are characterized by fear and people more than ever now are fearing to suffer the consequences of abandonment. We are referring to the kind of bonds we meet in the sessions: couples who are not married and proceed in the therapy in parallel with difficulties closely related, people fearful of intimacy, women who are stronger in the work than in the couple, serial monogamists, polilovers (or poliamories), disengaged families, adolescents that "command" over parents;
Change of tools, practices and procedures: we are referring to the therapeutic relationship between clinician - clients and significant others in the problem determined system. We observe changes in the terms of time of sessions and the frequency of encounters. Also changes are presented in the modalities of evolving procedures: the use of tools, the use of activities inside the therapy session instead to talking only, homework, meetings between the professionals which sometimes are more important than the individual session, supervision which includes the families...
Change of requests: times have changed and the requests of clients as well. Many come with a vague sense of anxiety without a clear symptomatology, others are very perturbed but have learned to act adaptively. The personality disorders organize and influence the symptoms while the traumas seem to have expanded. The problems brought to therapy seem to have widened while the social troubles are enmeshed with psychic ones and the clinicians need to open up to curiosity and flexibility.
Change of context: we are not working any more within the security of the four walls of our office. Professionals leave their rooms and approach more wide contexts, they meet real situations of tragedy or working in refugee camps. Many cooperate with the legal court for adoption issues and custody decisions, and others work with community organisations dealing with social issues.
